As to health, our overall goal is to provide medical, sanitary, nutritional, and dental care, with a strong emphasis on preventive medicine, to encourage individuals and groups within the community to embrace new habits that lead to and ensure a healthy lifestyle.
Fundación Proyecto Maniapure is the coordinator of healthcare services delivered within the premises of Centro La Milagrosa to the population of the Region in a Type 2 Healthcare Facility certified by the Ministry of Health And Social Development and attached to Sanitary District No. 5 (Cedeño District) to which all medical and epidemiologic data must be reported.
At Centro La Milagrosa, medical, dental, and nutritional care is provided from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. There is also a bioanalysis laboratory that performs clinical tests for diagnostic purposes and a pharmacy.
It is important to point out that telemedicine has been a key element to enable achievement of our health-related goals. It has been a great tool for physicians and interns for it has enabled medical advice across distance, confirmation of diagnosis by specialist physicians, search for medical information, and training of physicians and nurses from neighboring communities. Through telemedicine it has been possible to deliver specialized medical care to selected groups of patients whose cases have been previously studied by interns and discussed with specialist physicians.
Within the framework of our health project, planned visits to neighboring communities have been made and have proven to be effective for disease prevention.

Odonthology

Bioanalysis
This area is serviced by two bioanalyst interns running tests in a laboratory, which results are used to aid, confirm or complement diagnosis, enabling prescription of proper treatment.
-
Nutrition
At the Center, there are two nutrition interns, under supervision of the physician, providing nutritional care to the adult and pediatric populations. Special care is given to pregnant women and children under the age of 7 who showthe highest level of malnutrition.
Furthermore, additional activities such as research and educational programs (such as cooking courses and lectures) for the adult population are carried out.
-
Pharmacy
The pharmacy ensures availability of medications required by the population through sale. Notwithstanding, medication free of charge is provided to patients who cannot afford them.
Visits Paid to Communities
Visits are paid on a weekly basis by the entire healthcare staff to communities located far from Centro La Milagrosa. These communities have no way of coming to the Center and are in need of medical care.
The purpose of such visits is to provide: healthy child checkup, vaccination, HBP screening, low risk pregnancy checkup, curative medical care, treatment for internal parasites, health educational activities, dental fluor gel application, non- repairable tooth extraction, and promotion of dental care services for repairable tooth damage.
Outhouses
The Outhouse Construction Project, which strongly relates to health care, was launched in 1996. The design of the outhouse was chose among the models recommended by Fundación Zumaque (PDVSA). Within the framework of this project, outhouses are built upon request of families, whose contribution to their particular project is the excavation of a 2- cubic meter pit. Once the pit is done, building materials are provided and the outhouse is built under the supervision of a collaborator of the Center. Once the work is completed, the Center's collaborator is paid a small amount and the outhouse enters into operation. During the project's early days, nearly nobody showed interest in building an outhouse, but nowadays people of the Region are aware of the benefits health wise of having an outhouse.
When this project began, outhouses were built by workers from Fundación Proyecto Maniapure. Later, a group of French volunteers supported this initiative 'as is'. In the past two years, the project has been funded by one of our collaborators, Femme d'Europe, who is in the region within the framework of a project for fighting diarrhea, the first cause of death among the infant population.
Over 50 outhouses have been built since these project was launched. The annual goal is to build 12 to 15 units.
